JFS Ultra Runners Beat the Sunrise At Sundown Marathon 2010.

This race report of The Sundown Marathon 2010 is brought by Barbara Oravetz. Barb supported all the JFS runners all night long by staging a refreshment stations at the course.

Not sure how many runners for the Ultra but several hundred. Evidently the race organization had problems with logistics for the half marathon getting everyone to the start point, but didn't effect the long distance runners.

There were four runners from Jakarta or previously from Jakarta running the Adidas Sundown Marathon. Stephen Mitchell, Muara Sianturi and Neil Anderson all running the 84k and Adi Prabowo running the marathon.

The race started by the Changi exhibition center. The 84k race started at 6 pm to give them plenty of time to finish the race before sunrise. Nick and I went to a point along East Coast Parkway which was the 14k and the 29k mark going back the other way.

The 84k runners had to do 2 marathon loops which I know was difficult to get back to the finish at 42k only to have to head back out to run again. On the 2nd loop they had to run, these markers became the 56k and the 71k markers. We just put our ice chest down between the two paths so could watch the runners going both ways.

The runners had lots of obstacles to avoid to begin with as the path can be quite crowded with families and bicycles on a weekend, but has the sun went down it became more tranquil and of course more lonely as well.

The guys did great and the first loop all were looking very strong. On the 2nd loop they all slowed down as did all the runners in the race. They all kept going on despite their injuries or cramps.

Also at each stop with me they all stopped for several minutes at a time with Muara at the 71k choosing to actually take off his shoes and lay down for a while. I was worried once he got that comfortable he might not get back up again, but it actually really revived him and he ran the last 13k faster.

They all finished well in the top of the runners with Stephen really having a great showing with time of 10:05, Neil with 11:19 and Muara with 11:21. Adi finished his second marathon in 7:02.
